I love exploring the transient light of California coastal lands, and ways in which the ordinary become extraordinary with each passing hour. I paint out-of-doors, or plein air, whenever possible, and find inner peace as I paint with nature as my teacher. I appreciate the mystery of the changing light, and the ways in which colors and shapes interplay.
I’ve been lucky enough to paint with some of the best plein air painters; all sharing their wisdom and a bit of how they see nature through their own lens. However, beyond the teaching and the intellectualism, it seems that we’re all out to preserve a bit of the magic that sings to us, to transcend our own desire to control, and in the process of “letting go,” to emerge surprised and fulfilled by a painting that takes on a life of it’s own.
I like to think that the vistas I paint will be appreciated by generations to come, just as I now appreciate the works of early California Impressionists and Tonalists from a hundred years ago. I hope to bring an awareness of the natural beauty of open spaces, and in turn, contribute to their preservation.
